Under a gloriously clear sky with little breeze we played the first weekend of the club four ball kindly sponsored by Clancy’s bar & restaurant in Youghal. The recent spell of kind weather had made the course look beautiful even though the greens were very hard and fast.
It was obvious that this was going to produce some very competitive scores right from the start and after seeing some scores recorded in the low 40’s we then saw Ryan Hennessy and Carol Mullally bring in a nett 39 on the first day, and Rita Ryall and Martin O’Regan just one shot behind on 40.
The first weekend also witnessed an exhibition of pitch & putt from Seamus Murphy and Joy Bryan in recording a gross 48, a magnificent 6 under par.
This augured well for the rest of the competition, but although the leaders were challenged their scores stood strong going into the second weekend.
The second Friday was again a beautiful day for pitch and putt but the greens were drier, harder and faster this weekend. Stopping the ball on the greens proved to be a challenge too far for most and again, although threatened the leading scores proved impossible to chase down.
And so to the final Sunday, and one last chance to win a voucher for some great food from the sponsors. Half an hour before tee off the heavens opened. A couple of hardy (maybe hungry, given the prize) golfers braved the elements but with the rain falling and the accompanying wind blowing it was never going to happen. The scores from day one had stood the test of time and couldn’t be caught.
A huge thank you to Clancy’s for the sponsorship and to everyone who played, lets do it all again on Wednesday and Friday of this week and next.
